Enjoying a view of the water
This photo of Mary Mirota was taken near Sparta, New Jersey in the early 1930s, while she was a mother’s helper for the Lydecker family. They had a cottage there, and when not on the lake, they lived in Middlesex, NJ. Mary loved being by the water, and she was a strong swimmer. She has such a beautiful look to her. I love how her hair is swept under the scarf, or babushka, and how her arms are crossed. Mary always wore a watch, yet she wasn’t very punctual. She ran on her own time. And she always had time for children.
In this last photo, Mary Mirota is the tallest of the girls. It was also taken in the Sparta, New Jersey area. The Lydecker girls called her Meddy. It looks like it was a fine day for a picnic.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, since I also love being near the water. I think I will head down to the dock, and see how things look on the water from our cove here in Virginia. Many days I get to see eagles, herons, and osprey. The other day there were some mergansers floating and diving under. Today is such a gorgeous day, so there will be lots of boaters out. I love the water also. In fact, we’re in the FL Keys right now. I am curious how you find so many wonderful details about your family members. Are these things you learned from relatives or from documents/letters?

Amy, I love the Florida Keys! I used to live in Fort Lauderdale, and I miss the beautiful ocean and gulf waters. As for finding information while doing genealogy, I think it helps that my sister and I are a team – we can cover twice the ground in half the time. Plus, we come from a very talkative family! At any family reunions I’m the one with the notebook jotting down things. Our cousins and second cousins have also helped by contributing photos and stories. Good luck in your research!
