Staten Island Camp Fire Girls circa 1928

Camp Fire Girls was organized in 1910  by Dr. Luther Gulick and his wife Charlotte Vetter Gulick.  The official Camp Fire Girls Handbook was published four years later.

At their monthly meetings each Camp Fire Girl pledged:

“It is my desire to become a Camp Fire Girl,
and to obey the Law of the Camp Fire, which is to

Seek beauty
Give service
Pursue knowledge
Be trustworthy
Hold on to health
Glorify work
Be happy.

This Law of the Camp Fire I will strive to follow.”

The Official Handbook for the Guardians of the Camp Fire Girls, which cost 50 cents, was published in 1928, the same year this photo of Nina Horn and her troop of Camp Fire Girls was taken.

Fortunately Nina thought to write down the year and the names of the girls on the back of the photo. Standing around the ceremonial fire are are Dot Miller, Helen McNicol, Hazel Gardner, Grace Seigle, Hap Horn, Nancy Gardner, and Phyllis Greenlaw. The girls were approximately 15 years old in this photo. Also shown fourth from the left in the photo is the troop’s official Guardian, Cornelia “Nina” Horn (Hap’s mother).
