Happy International Women’s Day!

Today I’m celebrating some of the remarkable women in my family tree. Women’s History Month is celebrated in March, and since today is International Women’s Day I’m remembering some very important women – grandmothers and great-grandmothers of my beloved children – trailblazing, funny, smart, beautiful, and amazing ladies, one and all.

Mary Mirota Doran - taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s when she was a secretary.
Mary Mirota Doran – First generation Polish-American, this was taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s when she was a secretary in New Jersey, before marrying and raising a family. She was loved by all.
Zofia Sczcerba Mirota - As a young woman she left her native Poland to come to America and become a farmer's wife - 1937
Zofia Sczcerba Mirota – As a young woman she left Poland to come to America and become a farmer’s wife. She helped with running the farm, raising her four children to be self-reliant, and took in summer boarders to make some extra money. The farm didn’t have electricity under 1945. Evelyn Stewart Barnes - received a Masters in Nursing from Yale University - pictured here in her first uniform, November 1941.
Evelyn Stewart Barnes – Smart and hardworking, she received a Master in Nursing degree from Yale University.  She continued working as a nurse while a mother and grandmother, retiring at age 77. She’s pictured here in her first uniform – November 1941.
Maude Eisenberger Stewart - Taken about 1915 when she lived in York County, PA. She was known for her delicious Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, and kindness to family, neighbors, and strangers.

Mary Mahoney Doran - Born in Brooklyn, New York to Irish parents, After marrying a Belfast man, she raised eight children in Harrison, New Jersey during the Depression, by scrimping and saving, but always enjoyed spending some money on fun things like ice cream cones.
